The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a man with three gold bars worth around Tk90.49 lakh in Jashore's Benapole on Tuesday night (18 August).
The detainee was identified as Sujon Hossain, 34, son of Rafiqul Islam of Putkhali village under Benapole Port Police Station.
BGB confirmed the matter in a press note issued yesterday (19 August).
According to BGB, acting on a tip-off, a team from the Putkhali Border Outpost of Khulna 21 BGB Battalion took position in the Putkhali border area.
At around Tuesday night, the team stopped Sujon while he was travelling towards the border on a motorcycle and conducted a search.
Three gold bars weighing 397 grams in total were recovered after being found concealed on his body. BGB also seized the motorcycle and a mobile phone from his possession.
The seized gold was valued at Tk87,77,670.
During preliminary interrogation, Sujon admitted that he was carrying the gold bars with the intention of smuggling them into India through the Putkhali border.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Nafiz Imtiaz Ahsan, commanding officer of 21 BGB Battalion, said the seized gold bars had been deposited with the government treasury.
A case was filed against Sujon, and he was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station along with the seized motorcycle and mobile phone.
