IG Prisons Motaher Hossain withdrawn, transferred back to Army
The notification said the order was issued in the public interest and will take effect immediately; it did not specify a reason for the repatriation.
Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons, has been withdrawn from his deputation and sent back to his parent service, the Bangladesh Army.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification today (19 August), saying Motaher Hossain has been repatriated from his post at the Department of Prisons and his service has been placed under the Bangladesh Army.
The notification said the order was issued "in the public interest" and would take immediate effect. It did not provide any further explanation for the decision.
The development comes a day after Motaher Hossain told reporters that 690 of the 2,247 inmates who escaped from prisons across the country during the July Uprising on 5 August 2024 remain at large.
He also said prison authorities had no identification information for 166 of the fugitives, who escaped from Narsingdi District Jail after documents and electronic servers were destroyed during the unrest.
Of nine listed militants who escaped at the time, six have since been rearrested while three remain at large, he said.
Motaher had also disclosed that prisons currently house around 98,000 inmates against an official capacity of 45,000.
The notification did not name his replacement as Inspector General of Prisons.
