Unilever has become integral to Bangladesh’s growth: UK trade envoy
Visiting Unilever’s Kalurghat Factory was a rewarding experience, says the envoy

Baroness Rosie Winterton DBE, the UK trade envoy to Bangladesh, praised Unilever's British origins and its integral role in the country's development, highlighting the strength of UK–Bangladesh collaboration.
"Visiting Unilever's Kalurghat Factory was a rewarding experience. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and high spirits of the team, as well as the sustainable production facility that ensures top-quality products for the people of Bangladesh," she said during her visit to Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL)'s Kalurghat Factory (KGF) on Saturday.
A high-level delegation, led by Baroness Winterton and Sarah Cooke, british high commissioner, toured production lines, observed safety systems, and engaged with employees to learn about UBL's sustainable practices. A tree-plantation activity further reinforced their shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
The delegation was welcomed by senior UBL leaders, including Zaved Akhtar, chairman and managing director; Zinnia Huq, chief financial officer; Shamima Akhter, director of Corporate Affairs, Partnerships and Communications; and SM Tareque Saifullah, head of Factory, Kalurghat.
The visit highlighted Unilever's six-decade journey in Bangladesh, beginning in 1962 with its first soap manufacturing facility in Kalurghat. Today, UBL produces more than 21 iconic brands locally, with over 96% of products manufactured in Bangladesh. Since 1973, the government has held a 39.25% stake, reflecting a unique public–private partnership.
Spanning 15 acres along the Karnaphuli River, KGF has maintained zero waste-to-landfill since 2014 and achieved 100% renewable energy certification in 2021. Continuous process optimisation has saved over 2.4 billion litres of water since 2010, underscoring UBL's commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
High Commissioner Sarah Cooke commented, "British companies like Unilever, with local commitments, are key partners in Bangladesh's journey toward inclusive and green growth."
Zaved Akhtar added, "Kalurghat Factory embodies innovation, sustainability, and industrial excellence. Hosting the UK Trade Envoy and British High Commission officials will further inspire us to lead in industrial transformation."
