TMSS completes first bone marrow transplant in Bogura
TMSS Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre has successfully completed the first-ever bone marrow (stem cell) transplant in Bogura, marking a major milestone in healthcare services in northern Bangladesh.
The achievement was officially announced at a press conference held in Bogura.
The successful transplant was performed on 60-year-old Md Mizanur Rahman, a resident of the Bhandabari area in Rangpur district. The procedure was led by Professor Dr Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh.
The patient was initially diagnosed with his condition on 12 February, 2024. After undergoing treatment for six months without significant improvement, he was admitted to Evercare Hospital in December 2024. Following detailed medical examinations in August 2025, doctors determined that a stem cell transplant was required. The entire treatment process was subsequently completed successfully at the TMSS Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Center.
During the press conference, physicians and specialists shared details of the treatment process, medical challenges and overall clinical experience. Speakers also highlighted the growing capacity of healthcare professionals in Bangladesh to deliver advanced and life-saving treatments outside Dhaka, reflecting a significant advancement in regional healthcare infrastructure.
Those present at the event included Deputy Executive Director of TMSS Rotarian Dr Md Matiur Rahman, Chief Consultant of TMSS Dr Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh, Principal of TMSS Medical College Professor Dr Md Zakir Hossain, along with other haematology specialists and senior figures from the healthcare sector.
Speaking at the event, Rotarian Dr Md Matiur Rahman said the successful bone marrow transplant in Bogura was not only a milestone for TMSS but also a significant achievement for the healthcare system of northern Bangladesh. He said the success reflects TMSS's commitment to delivering advanced and quality healthcare to people in the region.
Dr Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh said the achievement demonstrated that with proper infrastructure and skilled manpower, complex procedures such as stem cell transplantation can be performed safely and successfully at the regional level. He expressed confidence that TMSS would achieve many more such successes in the future.
Professor Dr Md Zakir Hossain said the accomplishment was a matter of pride not only for TMSS but also for the healthcare sector of northern Bangladesh, adding that it would help spread the message of advanced medical services across the region.
Sharing his experience, Md Mizanur Rahman said he had almost lost hope after months of treatment but credited his doctors for their continued support. He said that by the grace of Almighty Allah and due to the care and successful transplant at TMSS, he is now hopeful of making a full recovery.
