Tejgaon College students end Farmgate road blockade, threaten police station siege over classmate's death
The students have announced that they will besiege Tejgaon Police Station on Thursday (15 January) to press the same demand
Students of Tejgaon College have cleared the roads and surrounding areas they had blocked in the Farmgate area, where they were demanding justice for the death of their classmate, Sakibul Hasan Rana.
The students have announced that they will besiege Tejgaon Police Station on Thursday (15 January) to press the same demand.
Traffic in the Farmgate area, which had been blocked for several hours, returned to normal after the students vacated the road around 4:00pm on Wednesday (14 January). The road had initially been blocked around 11:30am as part of the protest.
From noon, traffic on the Farmgate intersection and the connecting road to the Elevated Expressway was completely halted. This caused long lines of vehicles in the surrounding areas and severe inconvenience for the public. After the students suspended their programme, the situation gradually began to normalise in the afternoon.
However, the protesting students said that there has still been no visible progress on their demand. Therefore, they decided to leave the road for the time being to avoid public congestion.
They also warned that if there is no visible progress in prosecuting the accused and delivering justice for the murder, they will besiege Tejgaon Police Station.
According to the students, more than a month has passed since Sakib's death, yet there has been no response in the judicial process. In this situation, they remain determined to continue their protest until their demand is met.
On the night of 6 December, Sakibul Hasan Rana, a student of the Higher Secondary Science Department, was seriously injured in a conflict at the Tejgaon College dormitory.
After receiving treatment for four days, he died on 10 December. Previously, the students have blocked roads multiple times demanding justice for this incident and the arrest of the accused.
