Dhaka Wasa launches smart water meter pilot project
The Smart Water Management (SWM) – Smart Meter System Pilot Project was formally inaugurated in Dhaka with the aim of making the city's water management system more modern, efficient, and sustainable.
The inauguration ceremony was held at 9:00 am on Wednesday, 14 January 2026 at the Buriganga Multipurpose Hall of the Dhaka WASA Building.
Adilur Rahman Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, attended the programme as the chief guest. Secretary of the Local Government Division, Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, and Heejung Kim, chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Bangladesh, were present as special guests.
The programme was chaired by Managing Director of Dhaka WASA, Engineer Md Abdus Salam Bepari.
At the inauguration ceremony, a video presentation highlighting Dhaka WASA's overall activities was screened. This was followed by a technical presentation outlining the key components of the Smart Meter System Pilot Project. A separate technical presentation was also delivered on the Sustainable DMA Management Tool (SDMT).
Speakers said the implementation of the smart meter system would help reduce water wastage, detect illegal connections, enhance transparency in billing, and improve the quality of customer services. They expressed optimism that the pilot project would play a transformative role in Dhaka's water management system.
In his address, the chief guest emphasised the importance of using smart technologies to ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability in urban water management. He said the successful implementation of the pilot project would pave the way for expanding smart metering systems on a larger scale in the future.
The programme concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks from the chair.
