Islamic University employee confesses to killing teacher over transfer
Asma Sadia Runa's autopsy was completed at around 10am yesterday and she was laid to rest at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard following a Namaz-e-Janaza
The employee accused of killing Asma Sadia Runa, an assistant professor and chair of the Social Welfare Department at Islamic University, has confessed to the murder in a written statement.
Fazlur Rahman, an employee of the Political Science Department, provided the two-page confession on Wednesday night (4 March) while undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.
Dr Hossain Imam, the hospital's Resident Medical Officer (RMO), confirmed the development to The Business Standard yesterday (5 March), stating that the statement was taken in the presence of the police.
In his written testimony, Fazlur reportedly admitted that he was driven by a deep-seated grievance after the department head allegedly initiated his transfer and halted his salary.
This resentment eventually led him to carry out the fatal attack on the campus.
The doctor further noted that while Fazlur remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), his condition is no longer life-threatening. Although he is currently unable to speak, he is conscious, responding to calls, and able to provide answers by writing on paper.
His family members have arrived at the hospital and are making arrangements to move him to the capital for advanced treatment.
Earlier that day, Dr Hossain Imam confirmed that the autopsy of Asma Sadia Runa was completed at around 10am. Following a Namaz-e-Janaza at 2pm, she was laid to rest at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard.
The murder took place on 4 March, when Fazlur allegedly entered Runa's office in the Theology and Islamic Studies building and stabbed her.
Students later discovered the teacher in a pool of blood and found Fazlur in the same room with severe injuries, in what appeared to be an attempted suicide.
Both were recovered by the university proctorial body and police before being rushed to the hospital, where Runa was declared dead.
