Prime Now, Mastercard launch ‘numberless’ debit card in Bangladesh
Mastercard and Prime NOW, a digital service platform of Prime Bank, have introduced what they described as Bangladesh's first numberless debit card, aimed at strengthening security, privacy, and user control in digital payments.
The Prime NOW Mastercard debit card does not display the card number, CVV, or expiry date on the physical card, reducing the risk of sensitive information being copied, skimmed, or visually captured. With no exposed data, the card is designed to help prevent over-the-shoulder theft and common fraud attempts, the companies stated.
Card details are stored within the Prime NOW app and protected through multi-layer authentication, including optional biometric verification. Cardholders can access their card details through the app when required for online transactions.
The card also offers app-based controls, including QR-driven activation, spending limits, access management, and digital reissuance. If the physical card is lost, it carries no usable information, making unauthorised use more difficult, the companies stated.
The dual-currency debit card offers year-round privileges at more than 10,000 Mastercard partner merchants across Bangladesh. The card is designed with a minimalist approach, and cardholders can choose from multiple designs, customise the name displayed, and enable e-commerce transactions through the app.
Tanjil Chowdhury, Chairman of the Board of Prime Bank PLC, said, 'At Prime Bank, our 30-year legacy is built on trust, and our future is defined by innovation. With the Prime NOW numberless card — a first for Bangladesh — we are challenging the status quo. By removing physical card information, we have reduced the risk of visual theft and given users greater control through the Prime NOW app. This is not just a card; it reflects a shift towards a digital-first lifestyle.'
Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager for Bangladesh at Mastercard, said, 'The launch of the Prime NOW Mastercard numberless debit card marks a milestone in the country's digital payments journey. As consumers seek greater privacy and seamless control, numberless technology offers a safer and more intuitive way to transact. Mastercard is pleased to collaborate with Prime Bank in bringing this innovation to Bangladesh, reinforcing our commitment to secure, convenient, and future-ready payment solutions.'
