Minister calls for stronger supervision of BADC activities
The government is implementing phased measures to ensure sustainable, balanced growth across all sectors, reaffirming its commitment to the nation's progress. Agriculture remains a strategic focus, with targeted policies and initiatives underway to drive its advancement.
As part of these efforts, the government has launched a master plan to excavate 20,000km of canals over the next five years, with 5,000km currently being excavated in FY2025-26. Simultaneously, the distribution of farmer cards to marginal farmers nationwide is set to commence shortly.
Against this backdrop, Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid on Monday (6 April) issued key directives at a meeting on non-urea fertiliser management, aiming to make the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) more effective, better supervised, and more dynamic. The minister's official designation, along with those of Agriculture Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohammed and BADC Chairman Md Azizul Islam, are as styled below.
Speaking at the meeting, the minister underscored that no country's development is possible without a robust agricultural sector. He emphasised agriculture as a key driver of national growth, stressing that farmers must be prioritised and appropriately supported.
The minister assured that the country currently maintains adequate fertiliser stocks, with no anticipated shortages as imports continue uninterrupted. He also announced plans to assess the feasibility of transporting fertiliser by rail, in addition to the existing system, to reduce costs and enhance distribution accountability.
Agriculture Secretary Dr Rafiqul I Mohammed, BADC Chairman Md Azizul Islam, and other key officials attended the meeting.
