DUET hosts two-day international conference

The two-day international conference titled 'Next Generation Computing, IoT and Machine Learning (NCIM 2025)' began today at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur. Organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the event was inaugurated this morning at the Shaheed Shakil Parvez Auditorium to support and encourage high-quality research among students, academics, and researchers in addressing the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The event's chief patron, DUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Zainal Abedin, addressed the audience, stating that while the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents unprecedented opportunities, it also brings significant challenges. "By aligning innovation, ethics, and humanitarian values with research, we can prepare for the Fifth Industrial Revolution and build a technology-driven, sustainable, and equitable Bangladesh," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor further noted that the conference is taking place at a critical time when technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are shaping global discourse, alongside the emerging role of machine learning, big data, and cyber-physical systems. He expressed hope that the conference would open new doors for young researchers and help translate academic findings into practical solutions. He extended his gratitude to the CSE department and all participants for organising the event.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Arefin Kawsar, a key sponsor of the event, remarked that next-generation computing, IoT, and machine learning are no longer just technical subjects but vital tools for solving real-world problems, particularly in the Bangladeshi context. He highlighted the success of DUET students in fields such as robotics, automation, and internationally recognised research, urging young researchers to think boldly and act responsibly.

Professor Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, Head of the CSE Department and General Chair of the conference opened the session by thanking all contributors, sponsors, and participants. He noted that NCIM 2025 is not merely a technological platform but a collective endeavour to shape the future. "With the advent of quantum computing, IoT, and machine learning, the world is shifting towards smart, human-centric decision-making—and Bangladesh is already applying these technologies in agriculture, healthcare, and disaster management," he added.

Keynote speaker Associate Professor Mohammad Hirwan Sulayman from the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPASA), delivered the inaugural address. Also speaking were Session Chair Dr Mohammad Shahid Uz Zaman and Co-Chair and Organising Secretary Dr Momtaz Begum.

Other notable figures present on stage included Organising Chair Professor Dr Mohammad Abul Kashem and Organising Co-Chair and Session Co-Chair Professor Dr Mohammad Abdur Rauf.

DUET is the principal sponsor of the conference, with IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society as technical co-sponsors and the IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter providing technical support. ATN Bangla is the electronic media partner, with The Business Standard and Desh Rupantor as print media partners and The Daily Campus serving as the online media partner.

More than 300 researchers from 19 countries, including Bangladesh, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, are participating in this event. A total of 173 research papers will be presented, with awards given for the best presentations.

Deans, department heads, directors, faculty members, students, and distinguished academics and scientists from around the world are also attending the conference.
