DSCC launches training programme for battery-run rickshaw drivers

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) inaugurated a structured training programme for drivers of battery-run three-wheeler rickshaws (e-rickshaws) operating within its jurisdiction on 22 July. The initiative, led by DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia, was launched at a formal event held at the Nagar Bhaban Auditorium.
Organised by the DSCC Transport Department, the training programme will be rolled out in phases, with the first phase scheduled from 22 to 31 July across community centres under five regional offices. A total of 150 trainers have been appointed to conduct the sessions, targeting the training of 4,500 e-rickshaw drivers in this phase alone. Participants will receive meals and an honorarium as part of the programme.
Speaking at the inauguration, Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia noted the urgent need for regulation in the sector, "Unregulated and unsafe battery-run rickshaw operations have significantly contributed to traffic congestion and pose serious safety risks to the public. This training initiative marks the beginning of a systematic approach to regulating e-rickshaw operations in Dhaka city, aiming to reduce congestion and enhance public safety."
He further added that drivers will be able to obtain a driving licence upon completing the training by paying a nominal fee of Tk50. The initiative is part of the government's broader plan to bring the sector under a formal regulatory framework.
Senior DSCC officials including Chief Executive Officer Md Zahurul Islam, Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, and General Manager (Transport) Mohammad Nasim Ahmed were also present at the event.
