British Council offers women in STEM scholarships for sixth year
The British Council has announced the continuation of its fully funded Women in STEM scholarships, now in its sixth consecutive year, aimed at enabling women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
Offered under the British Council's Going Global Partnerships, the Women in STEM scholarship programme funds one-year master's degree courses at leading UK universities and research institutions.
The initiative seeks to expand opportunities for women in STEM, foster female leadership in science and innovation, and drive a more diverse, gender-inclusive STEM sector.
To date, 43 UK universities have participated, with approximately 500 scholarships awarded.
Each scholarship for the 2026–27 academic year is valued at a minimum of £40,000, covering tuition, living expenses, travel and visa costs, health insurance, and English language support.
Recipients gain access to premier science and research institutions, specialist STEM networks, and the UK's global alumni community.
For the 2026–27 cycle, 90 scholarships are available worldwide for applicants from 30 countries. Twenty-five of these are reserved for candidates from South Asia, in partnership with five UK universities.
Dr Jen Bardsley, Global Head of Enabling Research & Science at the British Council, said: "We are pleased to continue the Women in STEM scholarship programme for 2026–27, breaking down barriers for women entering STEM careers and supporting a more inclusive and diverse scientific community, which ultimately drives better outcomes for society."
Toufiq Hasan, Head of Education at British Council Bangladesh, said: "Bridging the gender gap in STEM demands ongoing investment in talent, access and leadership. The Women in STEM scholarship is central to our commitment to building a more inclusive and future-ready STEM ecosystem in Bangladesh by connecting emerging women leaders with the UK's world-class research and innovation landscape."
Sadia Zaman, a British Council Women in STEM scholar from Bangladesh, said: "The scholarship was transformative, strengthening my research skills and feminist practice, and empowering me to contribute to policy discussions and inspire other women in STEM."
Further information, including the list of eligible countries and participating universities, is available on the British Council's global website. Details for Bangladeshi applicants are provided in the Bangladesh section.
Applications for the Women in STEM scholarships are open until 30 April 2026.
