Bangladesh wins two silver, ten bronze at IMSO 2025

Bangladesh made a remarkable debut at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Students (IMSO) in Malaysia, where its primary school students earned two silver and ten bronze medals.
The results were announced during the closing ceremony on Thursday, 8 October, at Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah province. The event took place at Albukhary International University from 5 to 9 October 2025, with participation from over 400 students representing 23 countries.
Areejit Saha, a Year 5 pupil from St Joseph Higher Secondary School, won silver in mathematics, while Tahmid Hasan, a Year 5 pupil from Manarat Dhaka International School and College, received silver in science.
Bronze medals in mathematics went to students from St Joseph Higher Secondary School, SFX Greenherald International School, Mastermind English Medium School and Bonwari Lal Government High School.
Bronze medals in science were awarded to students from Lighthouse International School, SFX Greenherald International School, St Joseph International School, St Joseph Higher Secondary School and Mymensingh International School.
Silver medallist Areejit Saha expressed his excitement, explaining that his journey in mathematics began by winning a regional maths festival and describing this international medal as his life's greatest achievement.
Tahmid Hasan, the science silver winner, said he never imagined he would win a medal. Speaking with participants from different countries was a wonderful experience he will always cherish.
Team leader Zahidul Amin, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Science Popularisation Society, congratulated the students, stating that Bangladesh's debut at IMSO was a remarkable achievement, as every team member won a medal. He also commended the mentors for their guidance.
Brother Leo Pereira, Principal of St Joseph Higher Secondary School, expressed pride in his students' world-class talent. He said that initiatives like these are essential to strengthen students' foundations in mathematics and science from an early age.
This was Bangladesh's first appearance at IMSO, now in its 22nd edition. The national selection was organised by the Bangladesh Open Source Network and the Bangladesh Science Popularisation Society, which jointly hosted the country's first Bangladesh Mathematics and Science Olympiad (BdMSO) on 22 August 2025.
The Bangladesh team was also recognised as the Best Cooperative Team and became the runner-up in the STEM Exploration Competition held alongside the Olympiad.
