6 city corporations, including Dhaka North and South, get new administrators
The administrators will exercise the powers and perform the duties of the mayor as per Section 25(1) of the amended law and will receive remuneration and other benefits in accordance with existing government rules
The government has appointed six administrators to different city corporations under the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
According to a notification issued by the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives on 22 February, the appointments will remain effective until elected representatives assume office or until further orders.
The political identities of the newly appointed administrators to the six city corporations are as follows:
- Md Abdul Salam — Dhaka South City Corporation.
He is a member of the advisory council to the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
- Safiqul Islam Khan — Dhaka North City Corporation.
He previously served as acting general secretary of the Jubo Dal, the BNP's youth wing.
- Najrul Islam Monju — Khulna City Corporation.
He is a former organising secretary (Khulna division) of the BNP.
- Abdul Qayum Chowdhury — Sylhet City Corporation.
He is the president of Sylhet District BNP.
- Shakhawat Hossain Khan — Narayanganj City Corporation.
He is the convener of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP.
- Showkat Hossain Sarker — Gazipur City Corporation.
He is the president of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP.
The notification states that the administrators will exercise the powers and perform the duties of the mayor as per Section 25(1) of the amended law and will receive remuneration and other benefits in accordance with existing government rules.
Copies of the notification have been sent to the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister's Office, Election Commission Secretariat, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and other relevant authorities for necessary action.
