My Eurasian experience: A semester in Türkiye under an Erasmus+ scholarship
Studying abroad is more than an academic opportunity; it is a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion and global connection.
As a student of the Department of Real Estate at Daffodil International University (DIU), my academic path took an inspiring turn when I was selected for the fully funded Erasmus+ KA171 semester exchange programme. This opportunity allowed me to spend one semester at Çankırı Karatekin University in Türkiye – an experience that profoundly shaped my personal, academic and cultural outlook.
From the outset, Türkiye welcomed me with its layered history, warm hospitality and vibrant traditions. Studying at Çankırı Karatekin University introduced me to a dynamic academic environment where interactive learning, research-led discussion and multicultural collaboration played a central role. Engaging with professors and classmates from diverse backgrounds expanded my understanding of education systems and allowed me to experience learning beyond textbooks.
I took seven courses under the university's economics department, ranging from Environmental Economics and World Economics to Project Preparation, Income Distribution, History of Economy and Labour Economics. The lab facilities were high standard, and the campus maintained an eco-friendly environment that supported focused learning. Faculty members did not only share academic knowledge; they also introduced elements of Turkish culture through seminars and classroom discussions, which enriched the overall experience. I studied alongside students from Palestine, Ukraine, Ghana and Azerbaijan, which added a valuable global dimension to our learning.
What made the journey even more meaningful was how deeply I connected with Turkish culture. I adapted quickly to local lifestyle, traditions and social values, and over time I felt less like a visitor and more like a part of the community. The kindness of people, respect for tradition and strong sense of unity left a lasting impression. Çankırı itself, though smaller than many Turkish cities, offered a close-knit and friendly atmosphere that made it easy to feel at home. This experience expanded my academic horizons while helping me grow as an individual in an international setting.
Beyond academics, my time in Türkiye became an exploration of history, nature and civilisation. I visited cities including Bodrum, Isparta, Ankara, Antalya, Bolu, Istanbul, Safranbolu and Kastamonu, alongside many other remarkable places.
In Istanbul, I witnessed a striking blend of East and West, where centuries-old mosques stand beside modern architecture. Ankara, the capital, offered insight into the country's political and administrative centre. Antalya and Bodrum impressed with turquoise coastlines and Mediterranean beauty. Bolu welcomed me with serene natural landscapes, while Isparta – known as the "City of Roses" – offered a distinctive cultural charm. Safranbolu felt like stepping into history with its preserved Ottoman houses, and Kastamonu reflected the authentic spirit of Anatolian heritage. Each place added a new chapter to my journey and taught me something different about culture, history and humanity.
Language differences initially felt challenging, but they quickly became opportunities for growth. Communicating with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds strengthened my confidence and taught me patience, empathy and adaptability. Over time, I realised that true communication goes beyond language; it is built on mutual respect and understanding.
The Erasmus+ KA171 programme was not just a scholarship; it was a life-changing platform that fostered cross-cultural understanding, inclusivity and international friendship. Living independently in a foreign country helped me build resilience, strengthen problem-solving skills and develop a global mindset – qualities that will guide me throughout my academic and professional journey in real estate.
I am grateful to the Department of Real Estate at DIU and the Erasmus+ KA171 programme for providing this opportunity. I also thank the International Affairs Office at DIU for continuous support and guidance throughout the exchange process. Their cooperation made the journey smoother and more memorable.
DIU's International Affairs Office offers students numerous opportunities to apply for scholarships each year. These programmes open doors to study abroad, gain international experience and broaden horizons. For those considering Türkiye, Europe or other leading study destinations, preparation matters: aim for strong academic results, build intercultural skills, stay informed about current affairs, learn at least one foreign language, and develop leadership through volunteering and social work. For anyone taking this path, I wish you the very best – and I am confident it can be a life-changing experience.
This semester exchange in Türkiye will remain one of the defining chapters of my life – one that inspired me to dream bigger, explore further and embrace diversity with an open heart.
