BADC holds workshop on community seed bank and adaptive research

A workshop on Community Seed Bank and Adaptive Research was held on Wednesday at the seminar hall of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) headquarters in the capital.
The event was organised by BADC's Research Cell with financial support from partner projects. It brought together subject experts from Gazipur Agricultural University, representatives of agriculture-related institutions, heads of different BADC departments and wings, and field-level officials.
BADC Chairman (Grade-1) Md Ruhul Amin Khan attended as chief guest. He said BADC's role in the country's agricultural system is undoubtedly significant and that the organisation is now making strong contributions in research. Through its Research Cell, BADC has released 39 crop and fruit varieties, while research on 14 topics is currently underway.
The chairman added that BADC has launched 10 community seed banks to help restore nearly extinct local varieties. Research is ongoing to revive 70 traditional rice varieties — including Kataribhog, Kalijira, Tulsimala, Ratabaro and Gainja — at three seed multiplication farms. While region-specific local rice continues to be cultivated on a limited scale in some areas, continued research through community seed banks will not only support restoration but also encourage farmers to grow them more widely.
