Acts of the Awami League are demeaning the country internationally, BNP believes
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain alleges the Awami League-led government has failed to suppress their acts of torture, disappearance, murder, extrajudicial killings and human rights violations.
"The whole world now knows there is no democracy in this country," he said, speaking as chief guest at a discussion marking the 86th birth anniversary of party founder Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club.
Bangladesh is now a globally recognised autocratic country, he added.

Mosharraf said the acts of the Awami League were demeaning the country internationally.
"More than one lakh cases were filed against 36 lakh BNP leaders and activists. Disappearances and extrajudicial killings are going on. This cannot be the image of a democratic country."
"The Awami League government thought they could stop public protests with torture, but it failed," said the veteran BNP leader.
Bangladesh was not invited to US President Joe Biden's virtual Summit for Democracy, which shows the current standing of Bangladesh's democratic practices, said Mosharraf, adding that US sanctions on RAB and its officials were also embarrassing for the country.
Speaking as special guest, Dhaka north city unit BNP convener Aman Ullah Aman, demanded the resignation of the Awami League government.
"If necessary, another mass uprising will be organised to bring back democracy," Aman added.
The Dhaka North and South City Corporation units of the BNP jointly organised the event presided over by Abdus Salam, BNP convener of Dhaka South City Corporation.
