BNP urges interim govt 'not to pass' police commission, NGO laws before polls
‘We believe the intention behind passing these laws just before the election carries a different motive and will obstruct the path to democratic progress’, says Fakhrul
The BNP has urged the interim government not to proceed with passing the laws regarding the amended Police Commission Act and NGO before the national polls, alleging that the authorities are rushing to pass with a "different motive."
"Informed sources tell us that the interim government is attempting to hurriedly pass two laws. One is the amended Police Commission Act and another related to NGOs," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul said in a statement today (28 November).
"We believe the intention behind passing these laws just before the election carries a different motive and will obstruct the path to democratic progress."
He added that passing such significant legislation without the people's mandate would be inappropriate.
The BNP leader further stated that such laws should be formulated in the next national parliament through proper debate.
The party urged the government to refrain from undertaking such steps at this stage.
