A railway staff has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a female passenger inside a toilet on the Rangpur Express train at Dhaka's Kamalapur Railway Station on Wednesday (25 June).

The incident occurred between 8:45am and 9:15am while the train was stationed at platform-4 of the station, according to the Railway Police.

"The accused, Saiful Islam, 28, a public address announcer [PA operator] of the train, was taken into custody that day following a case filed by the victim under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act," Dhaka Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jaynal Abedin told The Business Standard today (27 June).

Describing the incident, the OC said, "The victim arrived at the station on Wednesday morning intending to travel to her home in Kurigram. As she did not have a ticket, she sought assistance from Saiful.

"He lured her with the promise of letting her travel without a ticket and pulled her onto the train. Later, he raped her inside the train's toilet."

He added, "When the victim reported the incident to the Railway Police, the on-duty officers immediately apprehended the railway staff."

The Railway Police issued an official statement on the same day stating that legal action against the accused is underway.
