Faridpur man sentenced to life imprisonment six years after being charged for rape
A Faridpur court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for a rape case filed in 2018 in Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur.
Judge Shamima Parveen (District and Sessions Judge) of the Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict this afternoon (31 March).
Besides, the court imposed a fine of Tk50,000 on the absconding convict Jaman Khalasi, 53, hailing from Azimnagar Union of the upazila.
The verdict specified that if he fails to pay the fine, he must serve an additional three years of imprisonment.
As the accused was not present in court during the announcement, the judgment was delivered in his absence, and the court subsequently issued an arrest warrant against him.
Confirming the details, Public Prosecutor (PP) Golam Rabbani stated that the court handed down the sentence under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
According to the case statement, the victim was staying at her father's house at the time of the incident which occurred on 24 February, 2018, at approximately 7:30pm.
While returning from a shop, Jaman Khalasi and an unidentified accomplice spotted her and forcibly took her to a nearby kalai field and raped her.
When she screamed, local residents rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.
The following day, the victim filed a case at Bhanga Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, naming Jaman and an unidentified accomplice as the accused.
