Proposal tabled to name parliament entrance after General Osmani, honour legacy in textbooks
Lawmaker also proposes state-level observance of the Liberation War commander’s birth and death anniversaries.
A proposal has been made in parliament to name its main entrance the "MAG Osmani Gate" and include the life, struggles, achievements and patriotism of General MAG Osmani in national textbooks.
Cumilla-6 lawmaker Md Manirul Haque Chowdhury made the proposal through a notice under Rule 302 of the Rules of Procedure during the parliamentary session today (8 September).
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad accepted the notice and directed the relevant ministry to respond to the lawmaker and inform the Parliament Secretariat.

In the notice, Manirul also proposed observing the birth and death anniversaries of General Osmani, the commander-in-chief of Bangladesh's Liberation War, at the state level.
The lawmaker said Osmani's contributions had not received adequate state recognition and questioned whether his role had been properly covered in school and college textbooks.
He said Osmani played a significant role in the development of Bengali nationalism and joined the Liberation War despite being at an age when he could have remained in retirement.
Manirul also recalled Osmani's resignation as a minister in protest against the introduction of one-party rule after independence.
He called for greater state recognition of Osmani's life and contributions so that future generations could learn about his patriotism, integrity and role in the Liberation War.
