BNP welcomes decision to hold national polls in February

The BNP has welcomed Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's announcement that he would write to the chief election commissioner to hold the 13th national election in February next year.

Speaking to reporters at the party chairperson's Gulshan office tonight (5 August), BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said, "All of us, including the nation, was waiting for this announcement. This will further establish political stability in the country."
"With the announcement, the uncertainty that was hanging over the fate of the election is no more," he said in his immediate reaction.
The BNP leader further said, "A letter will be sent to the Election Commission requesting the announcement of the election date before Ramadan. The Election Commission will, of course, announce the election schedule in due time."
He added, "We hope the upcoming election will be fair, neutral, and one of the most acclaimed in the world. With that goal in mind, we urge the whole nation to begin preparing."
'Committed to giving July Declaration constitutional recognition'
Salahuddin Ahmed also welcomed the July Declaration that was officially read out by the chief adviser at the South Plaza of the National Parliament today.
He said, "We are committed to giving the July Declaration formal and constitutional recognition at the appropriate place in the Constitution."
Reflecting on the events of the last year, Salahuddin said, "Exactly one year ago, on this day, we were liberated from fascism. A fascist-free Bangladesh was achieved at the cost of the blood of thousands of people. We pay deep respect to the continuous 16-year-long struggle for the rights of the Bangladeshi people and to those who sacrificed their lives."
"We express our condolences and respect to those who were martyred, injured, or left permanently disabled during the mass uprising," he added.
The senior BNP leader mentioned that BNP has been engaged in discussions with the National Consensus Commission over the past year regarding reforms aimed at public welfare and restructuring the state system.
"We have reached a consensus on reforms and hope that it will soon be formally signed. If further discussions on the implementation process are held, we will participate in them. Our goal is to establish a strong democratic state, society, and government system," he said.
