The Election Commission today served a show-cause notice to Awami League's candidate Atiqul Islam for violating electoral code of conduct during the campaign for upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation polls.

On Saturday (January 4), the BNP-nominated mayoral candidate Tabith Awal lodged the complaint before the Election Commission against Atiqul Islam who is also the incumbent mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.

In his complaint, Awal said Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam had held a meeting with his supporters, Awami League's leaders and activists at Gulshan Park on Saturday morning. He also used loudspeakers and a sound system where he sought votes for himself.

Both are a violation of the electoral code of conduct-2016.

Earlier, on December 29, the Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced Atiqul Islam's name as the mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation.

The elections of Dhaka South and Dhaka North City Corporations is scheduled to be held on January 30.

Atiqul was backed by the ruling Awami League to contest in the by-election of Dhaka North in 2018 after the position had gone vacant following the death of the former mayor and businessman Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.

Atiqul is a brother of former Chief Justice Md Tofazzal Islam and former Border Guard Bangladesh Chief Moinul Islam.

A former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association for the 2013-14 tenure, Atiqul Islam now heads the Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industries.
