Former mayor Atiq, wife and daughter barred from leaving country
According to the ACC, Atiq and others are under investigation for allegations of abuse of power, irregularities in tender processes, and embezzlement of public funds
A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam, his wife Shaila Shagufta Islam, and their daughter Bushra Afreen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order today (7 January), following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said the commission's Assistant Director (Public Relations) Md Tanzir Ahmed.
ACC Deputy Director Md Saifuzzaman filed the petition, requesting the court to prevent them from leaving the country amid ongoing investigations.
According to the petition, Atiq and others are under investigation for allegations of abuse of power, irregularities in tender processes, and embezzlement of public funds, including in the procurement of mosquito larvicide spraying equipment.
The investigation reportedly revealed that Atiq and his family members hold assets in various locations across the country and abroad in countries such as Canada and the United States. Authorities fear that the accused may transfer their movable and immovable properties and flee the country, which could impede the ongoing investigation.
