- New pay structure to be finalised before 6-month deadline, says commission chairman
- Salaries lag behind inflation and GDP growth
- CA stresses salary alignment with current realities and health insurance
- Commission to review salaries and benefits across government and state-affiliated bodies
- Overhaul includes allowances, pensions, performance evaluation, and rationalisation of perks
The National Pay Commission is working on a comprehensive overhaul, including a timely salary structure, allowances, retirement benefits and pensions, and evaluation of officer and employee performance.
The commission Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan informed Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during a meeting at the state guest house Jamuna today (14 September), according to a press release.
At the meeting, the chairman said they are working on major reforms including separate pay scales for specialised positions, allowances such as house rent, medical, and transport, income tax considerations and salary adjustments linked to inflation.
"We have already started work in full swing. Although six months were allocated to determine the salary structure, we aim to submit the final report sooner," he said.
He noted that the commission also plans to rationalise perks like telephone, car, and mobile allowances and address inconsistencies in salary grades and increments.
Zakir Ahmed highlighted that despite inflation and GDP growth over the past decade, salaries have not increased proportionately.
The chief adviser emphasised the importance of aligning salaries with current realities and highlighted health insurance for officials.
"Even with higher salaries, many lose assets due to a single illness. Insurance ensures family security, as seen in some neighbouring countries," he said.
The National Pay Commission, formed after a decade, will review and recommend salaries, allowances, and benefits for officials and employees of government, semi-government, autonomous organisations, state-owned banks, approved universities, and state-owned industrial enterprises covered by the national pay scale.
