Holidays turn Cox’s Bazar into a sea of tourists
The surge has raised expectations of business exceeding Tk100 crore this season
A massive influx of tourists during the extended Christmas holidays transformed Cox's Bazar sea beach into a sea of people, with dense crowds stretching from Laboni Point to Kolatoli Point throughout the day (25 December).
Md Tuhin, a local beachside vendor, said the crowd was not confined to peak hours. "From early morning, this entire stretch of the beach has been packed with tourists."
Tourism stakeholders estimate that more than 200,000 visitors flocked to Cox's Bazar over the three-day holiday, marking the highest tourist turnout in the district this year.
Hasnat Sharif, who traveled from Sylhet with his family, said the destination never fails to refresh him. "Sometimes I come alone, sometimes with friends, and this time with my family. The blend of sea and hills creates an environment that truly lifts the mind," he said.
Tasnin Chowdhury, a visitor from Chattogram, echoed the sentiment, saying, "The weather, surroundings and natural beauty here set Cox's Bazar apart from other places in the country."
Adding to the festive atmosphere, luxury hotels organised special events, while all rooms across more than 500 hotels and motels in the resort town remained fully booked until 31 December. The surge has raised expectations of business exceeding Tk100 crore this season.
Abul Kashem Sikder, president of the Hotel and Motel Owners' Association, said the tourism sector is poised for a record season. "With heavy crowds and full occupancy, tourism business is expected to cross the Tk100 crore mark," he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have tightened security measures to ensure tourist safety and prevent harassment. Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Cox's Bazar Region Apel Mahmud said ensuring visitor safety remains the top priority. "We are working relentlessly to prevent any form of harassment," he added.
