Man held for raping child after luring her with promise of snacks in Cox's Bazar

Police have arrested a man in Cox's Bazar's Chakaria upazila on charges of raping an eight-year-old after allegedly luring her with the promise of snacks.
The arrest was made during an operation in the early hours today (2 May) from the Palakata area of Chakaria municipality, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station Mohammad Monir Hossain.
The accused, Kamal Uddin, 56, is a resident of the Minibazar area in Kakara union. The victim also lives in the same locality.
According to allegations from the victim's family, the accused was known to the child.
Yesterday evening (1 May), he allegedly lured her from a local market with the promise of buying snacks and later took her to a nearby tobacco curing shed, where the assault took place.
After returning home, the child fell ill and informed her mother about the incident. She was later taken to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex by her family members.
The OC said the family initially informed police verbally last night. Following a preliminary inquiry, police launched a drive to arrest the accused.
"He was arrested during a raid conducted between midnight and 3am on Saturday after police traced his location in the Palakata area, where he was hiding in a house," the officer said.
Police said a case will be filed once the victim's family submits a written complaint, after which legal action will be taken.
