4 more children with measles symptoms die in Cox’s Bazar, Gazipur
The latest fatalities in Cox’s Bazar bring the district’s total to 13 deaths in just 37 days, while in Gazipur, a state-run medical college hospital reported their first two deaths amidst a surge in new admissions
The death toll from the measles outbreak continues to climb as four more children succumbed to symptoms of the disease in Cox's Bazar and Gazipur in 24 hours to this morning (4 May).
The latest fatalities in Cox's Bazar bring the district's total to 13 deaths in just 37 days, including the passing of a Rohingya child, while health authorities in Gazipur reported their first two deaths at a state-run medical college hospital amidst a surge in new admissions.
In Cox's Bazar, two infants from Ramu upazila died while undergoing treatment at the district sadar hospital. One of the victims, eight-month-old Atikur Rahman, was admitted early yesterday and passed away at 8am the same day.
The other, six-month-old Wajifa, had been hospitalised since 24 April and breathed her last at 9pm yesterday.
According to data from the Cox's Bazar Civil Surgeon's office, some 13 children have died with measles symptoms since 29 March.
Of the deceased, six were from Ramu, two from Sadar upazila, and one each from Cox's Bazar municipality, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, and Ukhiya.
Currently, 147 children are hospitalised across seven facilities in the district, with 52 new admissions recorded in the last 24 hours.
Since late March, a total of 1,399 children have sought treatment for these symptoms in Cox's Bazar district.
Meanwhile, in Gazipur, two infants – nine-month-old Raihan and five-month-old Sifat – died at Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital last evening.
Raihan hailed from the city's Bason area, while Sifat was from Maona in Sreepur Upazila.
Gazipur Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mamunur Rahman confirmed the deaths today, noting that 21 more children were admitted to the hospital with similar symptoms in the last 24 hours.
Currently, some 47 children are receiving treatment at Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. Across Gazipur, five out of six government hospitals prepared for measles cases have seen admissions.
To date, some 591 children have been hospitalised in the district, of whom 542 have returned home after recovery, according to the doctor.
