Govt names 7 members of Judiciary Reform Commission
The commission will begin its work on 3 October and submit reform proposals, prepared after consultation with all stakeholders, within the following 90 days to the chief adviser, reads a gazette notification
The government has formed an eight-member Judiciary Reform Commission with the aim of necessary reforms to make the judiciary independent, impartial and more effective.
The commission will be headed by Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman, reads a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division tonight (3 October).
Mominur was appointed as an Appellate Division justice in July 2009. However, he resigned in May 2011 in protest after being passed over twice for promotion to chief justice.

The gazette notification, signed by Cabinet Division Secretary Mahbub Hossain, states that the commission will begin its work on 3 October and submit reform proposals, prepared after consultation with all stakeholders, within the following 90 days to the chief adviser.
The Cabinet Division also said the office of the commission will be decided by the government.
Who are the other members?
Apart from Mominur Rahman, the commission is composed of two other justices, two judges, a lawyer, a university professor, and a student representative.
The other members are: Emdadul Haque, a former High Court justice and a former district and session judge; Farid Ahmed Shibli, also a retired High Court justice and a former district and session judge; former district and session judge Syedul Aminul Islam, who also served as a registrar of the Supreme Court; former district and session judge Masdar Hossain, who is also the plaintiff in the Masdar Hossain vs State case, Senior Supreme Court lawyer Tanim Hossain Shaon; Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan, associate professor, Department of Law, Dhaka University; and an unnamed student representative
According to the gazette notification, the head and the members of the commission will enjoy the rank, salary and facilities as determined by the government. Besides, the chief adviser will be able to grant the members any non-salaried facilities or the authority to carry out non-salaried responsibilities.
The commission has also been granted the authority to appoint any suitable individual as new members.
The government body will also be assisted by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
