Dhaka-12: Woman casts vote two minutes before polls close
The voter, Sudha said she chose to come and vote after watching on television that polling was going on peacefully
A young woman, Sudha Grace arrived at a polling centre in Dhaka-12 constituency just two minutes before the end of voting and cast her ballot at Tejgaon College centre today (12 February).
She entered the centre at 4:28pm while officials were preparing to conclude voting, as polling was scheduled to end at 4:30pm.
Authorities issued her a ballot paper as polling was still underway.
Sudha said she chose to come and vote after watching on television that polling was going on peacefully.
Accompanied by her mother who had just voted nearby, she said: "I did not vote in the last election. This is my first time voting."
Her mother said, "We want a fair working environment. As citizens, we want equal rights. There should be no discrimination based on religion or identity."
On her expectations from the new government, Sudha added, "I am a woman. I want a safe environment where I can move freely without fear. I do not want to be in doubt about whether I need to go abroad to build my career."
She expressed hope that people would not have to worry about safety when going out at night and that the new government would ensure such an environment.
