A man has been arrested in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila for allegedly killing his four-year-old daughter in a fit of rage following a dispute with his wife over money for drugs.
The incident took place around 8:30pm last night (5 July) in Monkhali Konarpara area under Jaliapalong union, Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Arif Hossain told TBS.
The deceased, Kaniz Fatema Juthi, was the daughter of the accused Aman Ullah, 35, a resident of the area and son of the late Nurul Alam.
Quoting locals, OC Arif Hossain said, "Aman Ullah had been addicted to drugs for a long time. He would frequently argue with his wife, Josna Akhter, over money to buy drugs. A similar altercation broke out between the two last night. When he attempted to assault her, she fled the house in fear and took shelter at a neighbour's house."
"Failing to find his wife at home, he became furious and struck their four-year-old daughter on the head with a hammer, killing her on the spot. He then dumped the child's body in a nearby canal," the OC added.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving information and began a search operation. Following information from family members and locals, they recovered the body from the canal and arrested Aman Ullah, the OC said.
The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
