'Everyone comes to help loved ones in danger': Uttara mugging victim Nasrin recounts event, earns plaudits for bravery

"Everyone comes to their loved ones' aid if they are in danger. I did the same," Nasrin Akhter Epti, victim of the Uttara Sector-7 mugging incident yesterday, said.
Speaking to The Business Standard over phone today (18 February), the 28-year-old said her husband, Mehebul Hasan, 37, was undergoing treatment at the Evercare Hospital.
"We are waiting for the surgery. Please keep us in your prayers," she said.
Nasrin rose to the occasion last night.
The image of her, with her arms outstretched in a gesture to protect her husband against the attack by muggers, won plaudits on social media.
But Nasrin remains humble, bound by duty to those she loves.
"As I work in Tongi, I usually stay at my paternal home in Uttara. On Monday evening, we went out shopping at the nearby Amir Complex of Uttara. On the way back to back at around 9pm we encountered three people riding on a motorcycle. They were driving recklessly," she recalled.
She said they heard a bang and saw the youths had collided with a rickshaw carrying a couple and a four-year-old child.
"The father of the child came down and slapped one of the three youths and then they got into a heated argument."
She said her husband then urged all involved to end the dispute.
"My husband only asked them to say sorry. Then at one point they attacked my husband. One of them was on a call and kept saying: 'Do you know who we are?'"
When the three began to flee, Nasrin and her husband chased them.
"Later, we managed to grab one of them and pulled him from the motorcycle. The rest ran. Passersby helped."
And this is when the situation went out of control.
Within 10 minutes, 4-5 unidentified men came to the scene brandishing sharp weapons.
"They started hacking my husband. When I stood in front of him, I also got cut in my hand. My husband was stabbed in the lower part of his left armpit, on the right leg and the right elbow. I tried to save him, but I couldn't," she said.
Later, more locals and passersby came to their rescue and took them to a nearby hospital.
An attempted murder case has been filed over the attack with the Uttara West Police Station, Nasrin said.
