According to the police, the attackers are members of a local criminal gang.

Another person, identified as Alfaz Hossain Shimon, 22, was arrested later at night, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara zone Assistant Commissioner Saddam Hossain confirmed to The Business Standard at 10:30pm tonight.

Alfaz is the nephew of Milion Mia, expelled convener of Uttara West Thana unit Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, said an official of the Uttara West police station, he said.

A case over the attack was filed at Uttara West Police Station late last night, according to media reports.

Uttara West Police Station Inspector (Investigation) AB Siddique told Prothom Alo that the incident took place after the motorcycle the two attackers were recklessly driving hit a rickshaw first.

The rickshaw puller initially protested and the couple, who were on another motorcycle nearby, also joined his side. At one point of the altercation, the two youths called in a few more people to the scene after becoming aggressive and issuing threats. Later, they attacked the couple with sharp weapons, he added.

Hearing their cry for help, locals came forward and captured two of the attackers. They handed the duo over to the police after beating them.

Residents have said that such crimes, including mugging and sharp weapon attacks, have increased in various areas of Uttara in recent times.
