Attack on DMCH professor: Accused Farhan placed on 5-day remand
Remand petition says an unknown caller demanded $15,000.
A Dhaka court today (22 August) placed an accused on five-day remand in a case over the reported assault of Dhaka Medical College Hospital professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manzurul Islam passed the order after a hearing, confirmed Prosecutor Division Deputy Director Rokonuzzaman.
The accused, Farhan Shahriar alias Evan, was arrested yesterday from Ramganj in Lakshmipur, police said.
Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atikuzzaman, the investigating officer, had sought 10 days' remand to identify the other accused.
According to the remand petition, Dr Asadur, professor and head of the ENT and Head-Neck Surgery Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, had been seeing patients regularly at a chamber of Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar for about two months.
On 17 August at around 10:45pm, the doctor was getting into a three-wheeler in front of the diagnostic centre when Farhan and several other accused allegedly blocked the vehicle.
When the doctor asked why the vehicle had been stopped, the accused allegedly pulled him out of the three-wheeler.
The remand petition says another accused, Jibon alias Adil, punched the doctor in his right eye, causing a serious injury. The group allegedly assaulted him repeatedly, leaving injuries to his head, both eyes and other parts of his body, and threatened him.
Passers-by then intervened and detained Jibon, while the others fled.
The case statement said the doctor had also received a call from an unknown mobile number demanding $15,000 in extortion money.
According to the remand petition, investigators traced the number and arrested Farhan from his home yesterday.
Farhan provided information about others allegedly involved in the incident during questioning, the petition said.
It also said Farhan admitted to being present at the scene and taking part in the incident.
