The European Union wants a democratic transition in Bangladesh, with a strong emphasis on the reform process, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today (28 January).

After a meeting with European Union Ambassador Michael Miller today, the CEC said, "They inquired about how we are preparing for the next democratic transition, specifically the upcoming election. They wanted to know about the timeline for preparations, starting from the voter list to other necessary steps."

"They also expressed their readiness to provide support and assistance in Bangladesh's progress. They want a democratic transition, and they are prepared to assist us in any way and stand by us," he added.

In response to a query, the CEC mentioned, "They will send personnel to assess our needs, and based on that assessment, they will decide where they can offer assistance. They also expressed interest in being observers if we request it."

Nasir Uddin further said, "We assured them about the election process, as we are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election."

He added, "They are pleased with our preparations. However, they pointed out that time is running short for reforms and emphasised that the reform process should continue."

On the topic of reforms, he said, "I told them that, according to the constitution, the Election Commission's independence must be guaranteed."

Meanwhile, Michael Miller, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, said, "I have come here today to meet the chief election commissioner. We had an excellent conversation about the perspective of the next election in Bangladesh."

"I have come with a message of support for the reform ambitions of the interim government to hold the election transparently in line with international standards. All we asked the CEC was what the European Union can do to support him in this extremely important moment," said the ambassador.
