Undercover cops singing with guitar bust 7 in anti-drug drive at Suhrawardy Udyan
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested seven individuals during an undercover anti-drug operation at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital, where officers posed as locals singing and playing the guitar as they approached suspects.
Confirming the matter on Thursday (14 May), Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Division NM Nasiruddin said Shahbagh Police Station conducted the special drive at around 9pm on Wednesday (13 May).
"While under the guise of singing songs and playing guitar, the officers caught seven drug users and drug dealers red-handed," he said.
The arrestees are Md Mamunur Rahman (24), Md Rana (19), Sajib Adhikari, Md Shahidul Islam (42), Md Rakib Hossain (19), Md Al Amin (19), and Md Mashum Bhuiya (24).
According to police, a special team from Shahbagh Police Station entered the park in plain clothes and moved around the area playing guitar and singing songs in order to avoid alerting the suspects.
Unaware of the police presence, the alleged drug users and dealers remained at their respective spots, allowing officers to approach and detain them with cannabis in their possession.
Sources at Shahbagh Police Station said the detainees were later shown arrested under the Narcotics Control Act and sent to the court of the Special Metropolitan Magistrate (Summary Trial Court) of the Ramna Division.
The court sentenced them to imprisonment for varying terms.
DC NM Nasiruddin said such creative and strict anti-drug drives by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police would continue as part of efforts to eradicate drugs.
