Man breaks into empty house in Gulshan, not to steal but to stay
Masum was caught hiding in a bathroom, appearing relaxed while surrounded by so many people and policemen, and a little drunk too
The Road-89 of Gulshan in the capital has lost its charm to the pandemic.
No longer do shoppers crowd the streets to buy branded clothes or people in office suits throng the restaurants after office for a hangout or to grab a cup of afternoon coffee. It often remains desolate unlike its usual feature before social distancing became the norm.
That held allure to Masum. About three days back, he spotted an empty flat that had its lights switched off all the time.

A homeless man that he is, according to police, Masum got himself a cosy place to live with enough food to eat and drink. Alas, the life that he could only dream of lasted only until Saturday night.
The flat owner, Rick Hubbard, and his wife Chris Hubbard, who run North End Coffee Roasters, had spotted a person loitering around from the US though a security camera. Rick informed someone he knew to check on his home.
Finally, Gulshan police busted the place. There were clear signs of someone living there with leftover food on the dining table and wine bottles. No one was around.
After a thorough search, Masum was caught hiding in a bathroom. Masum seemed relaxed surrounded by so many people and policemen and a little drunk too.
Inspector from Gulshan Police Station Aminul Islam said Masum is a thief with several cases filed against him.
"He is probably mentally challenged too. Previously, I have seen a video of him dancing while stealing goods from a different house."
Masum had been arrested before over the charges of theft.
At one point of the interrogation this time, he told police that he had recently been imprisoned in an Indian jail for 90 days.
There was a lack of coherence in what he said but he did not steal anything from the Gulshan flat.
"The thief said he found lots of food and he ate them," said Sub-inspector Mofazzel Hossain. Masum also admitted to being intoxicated by the alcohol, he added.
The flat owner refused to file any complaint with the police. So, the law enforcers decided to arrest him in another case filed in March and produce him in the court.
