Man killed as steel rod falls from building in Gulshan
Case filed over the incident
A man was killed after a steel rod fell on his head from a building in Dhaka's Gulshan area on Thursday (22 January).
The deceased was identified as Ashfaq Chowdhury Piplu, 40, an employee of a multinational company based in Gulshan.
Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Aziz Mahmud told The Business Standard today (24 January) that a case has been filed over the incident and an investigation is underway to identify the building from which the rod fell.
According to family members, Ashfaq was standing on the street and talking to another person beneath the building on Thursday afternoon when the steel rod fell from above and struck him on the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Speaking to the media, Ashfaq's cousin Shahidul Islam said Ashfaq has been buried at his home village in Barumchhara of Pukuria union under Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram.
"Ashfaq had bought a train ticket on Thursday night to travel to Chattogram. He was scheduled to attend a prize-giving ceremony of a football tournament organised by his own community group, Jagarani Club.
"But that journey never happened. He returned to the village not alive, but as a body," he said.
