Child dies as steel rod falls from under-construction building in Chattogram

A six-year-old girl died yesterday (1 March) after a steel rod fell from an under-construction building in Rangunia Upazila of Chattogram.

According to local residents, the victim, Muntaha was entering the gate of her house after returning from madrasa when a long steel rod fell from the building and struck her on the head. She fell unconscious at the scene with serious injuries.
Her family first took her to Rangunia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors provided primary treatment before referring her to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. A CT scan later detected internal bleeding in her head. As her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to Parkview Hospital in the city.
She died around 1am last night, while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rangunia police station told The Business Standard that no written complaint had yet been received over the incident.
"If we receive a complaint, necessary legal action will be taken in accordance with the law," he added.
Locals alleged there was no safety net or protective system at the construction site and demanded legal action.
