Jubo League leader dies in Ctg jail a day after arrest
Md Iqbal Hossain, senior jail superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail, said Nurul Alam was sent to jail on Tuesday afternoon after being arrested in a case.
A Jubo League leader died at Chattogram Central Jail today (24 June), a day after being arrested and sent to prison in connection with a 2024 Explosives Act case.
The deceased, Nurul Alam, 45, joint convener of the Satkania upazila unit of Jubo League, the youth wing of the activities-banned Awami League, fell ill in the jail this morning and was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Nurul's family alleged he was healthy when sent to jail and demanded an impartial judicial probe into his death, while jail and police officials said he fell ill suddenly and that due legal procedures were followed.
Nurul Alam was detained by the Chattogram district Detective Branch (DB) yesterday and turned over to Satkania Police Station.
He was later shown arrested in a 2024 Explosives Act case and sent to Chattogram Central Jail through a court order that afternoon.
His family alleged that he was sent to jail in good health and demanded a fair, impartial and judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
His sister Bokul Akter told The Business Standard that Nurul had gone to the assistant commissioner (land) office for work when detectives detained him.
"He was cheerful and healthy when he appeared before the court and when he was taken to jail. We fed him with our own hands. We do not know what happened inside the jail. This was a planned killing. We want justice," she said.
His uncle Robi Hossain also called for an impartial investigation and justice.
Senior Jail Superintendent Iqbal Hossain told TBS that Nurul was brought to jail yesterday afternoon and had no complaints of illness during the night.
He suddenly fell ill at around 7:30am today and was rushed to hospital as his condition became critical.
Satkania Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jahangir Alam said Nurul was not named in the original case but was later included in the investigation as a suspect.
He added that Nurul was healthy when sent to court and that all legal procedures had been followed.
Duty doctor Dr Nibidhita Ghosh said Nurul reportedly vomited several times before being brought to hospital.
CPR was administered, but he was declared dead, she said, adding that the exact cause of death can only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.
