5 detained after woman tied to pole, doused with water over theft allegation at Gulshan madrasah
Three of the detainees are minors.
Police today (4 January) detained five people in connection with an incident in which a woman had been tied to an electric pole and doused with water in the early winter morning at a madrasah in the capital's Gulshan, allegedly over accusations of theft.
Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rakibul Hasan said three of the detainees are minors, adding that no case has been filed so far in connection with the incident.
"After reviewing CCTV footage, we detained five individuals in connection with the incident," the OC said. The detained individuals are students of the madrasah, he added.
He said the next course of action will be decided following discussions with senior officials.
The incident took place at around 7:30am on Friday (2 January) in front of the Markazut Ta'leem Al Islami Madrasah in the Morel Bazar area of Nadda.
A video of the incident later circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism over the act of torture during the low temperatures of winter.
According to police, madrasah authorities claimed that the woman entered the institution's premises that morning. Madrasah authorities and others later detained the homeless woman on allegations of theft, tied her to an electric pole and poured water on her.
