Man detained with Tk21cr worth whale vomit in Teknaf
Ambergris, trading of which is banned in the country, is used in making highly valued perfumes and medicines

The Border Guard Bangladesh today detained a man with an 8kg whale vomit or ambergris worth Tk21 crore.
The arrestee has been identified as Shamsul Alam, 35, son of Neer Ahmed from Saint Martin's, reads a BGB press statement.
Ambergris, trading of which is banned in the country, is used in making highly valued perfumes and medicines.
Smuggling of ambergris is a rare incident in Bangladesh, states BGB.
On Sunday (6 October) afternoon, the BGB conducted a raid in the Shah Parir Dwip area of Teknaf and five whale vomit were recovered.
On Monday, Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute Cox's Bazar tested and identified the properties as ambergris, said BGB Teknaf's 2nd Battalion Captain Lt Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed.
The detainee has been handed over to the Teknaf Police Station and the seized ambergris have been submitted to the treasury department of Cox's Bazar deputy commissioner's office.
