Garment worker gang-raped in Munshiganj, 1 arrested

Police yesterday (21 February) arrested a man in a case filed over gang rape of a garment worker in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.
Nurul Islam Nuru, main accused in the case, was arrested after police conducted a raid in the upazila, Sirajdikhan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanul Haque confirmed today (22 February).
The OC said the arrestee made a confession during the initial interrogation.
Citing the case documents, the OC said the victim is a garment worker in Narayanganj. On 6 February, she was returning after work to her husband in Baluchar, Munshiganj by an auto-rickshaw.
When she reached the DC Project area in Baluchar, the accused along with another man named Arif Sarkar, 30, stopped the auto-rickshaw, threatened the woman with sharp weapons, took her to the bushes on the banks of the Dhaleshwari River, and gang-raped her.
Yesterday, the woman filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Sirajdikhan Police Station, naming five people.
Investigating Officer of the case Inspector Habibur Rahman said the arrestee was produced before the court today. A raid is underway to arrest the remaining accused.
