ASI, wanted for killing of Yamin who was thrown from APC in Savar, now arrested
The arrested officer, ASI Mohammad Ali, 31, was identified as one of the accused in the murder case.
Police have arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in connection with the killing of Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, who was shot dead by police and thrown from an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 18 July 2024 in Dhaka's Savar.
The arrested officer, ASI Mohammad Ali, 31, was identified as one of the accused in the murder case.
A team from Savar Model Police Station arrested Ali around 6am today (3 August) from the Murapara area of Rupganj in Narayanganj, confirmed Shahinur Kabir, additional superintendent of police (Savar Circle), in a press release shared via the police station's WhatsApp group.
Following the arrest, the accused was handed over to the International Crimes Tribunal's (ICT) Investigation Agency, as he was wanted under an ICT arrest warrant, the release stated.
The release also mentioned that ASI Ali had been absconding for a long time. His last known posting was at the Dhaka District Police Lines.
On 18 July last year, Yamin, a fourth-year student of computer science and engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was shot dead by police during the movement in the Savar Bus Stand area.
On 23 September that year, Mohammad Abdullah Alamin Kadir, maternal uncle of Yamin, lodged a complaint against 78 people.
