Ex-MP Fazle Karim’s personal assistant arrested 'while fleeing to India'

Police have arrested Irfan Ahmed, identified as the personal assistant of former Awami League lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, while he was reportedly attempting to flee to India after more than a year in hiding.
He was held on Wednesday afternoon (17 September) at the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria, police confirmed.
Irfan, vice-president of the suspended Raozan upazila unit of the Awami League, had gone into hiding following the fall of the Awami League government during the student-people uprising on 5 August 2024.
Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Raozan Police Station, told The Business Standard, "Based on our information, Irfan was arrested by immigration police at Akhaura land port. He is being brought back to Raozan. After that, he will be produced before court. There is a case against him at our station."
Police and local sources said Irfan faces several allegations, including torture and harassment of BNP and opposition activists, intimidation of Awami League leaders opposed to Fazle Karim, and vandalism and looting at the office of the religious-spiritual organisation Muniria Youth Tabligh Committee.
ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, who represented the Chattogram-6 (Raozan), is currently in prison.
