Accused arrested at Dhaka airport 3 years after allegedly killing wife
The accused, Ashraful Alam Suman, 51, was detained by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 12 February when he arrived in the country.
Police have arrested a man accused of killing his wife in Dhaka's Dakshinkhan around three years ago and burying her body before fleeing to Canada.
The accused, Ashraful Alam Suman, 51, was detained by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 12 February when he arrived in the country.
Confirming the matter, a police official from the immigration department told The Business Standard that Ashraful was arrested at the airport on the day of the national election.
Officer-in-Charge of Dakshinkhan Police Station Shariful Islam said the court that received the charge sheet in the case had issued an arrest warrant against Ashraful, which was held by the immigration authorities.
"On 12 February, when Ashraful arrived at the airport from Canada, immigration police detained him and informed us. We then arrested him and produced him before the court as per procedure," the OC told journalists on Thursday.
Ashraful is currently being held at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
The victim, Afroza, 40, went missing from her in-laws' house in Naddapara of Dakshinkhan on 27 May 2023. On the night of 31 May that year, police recovered her body buried within the boundary of the house.
Afroza's younger brother Mohammad Ariful Islam said the family was not aware of the arrest immediately.
"We didn't know about the arrest. About a month later, when we went to inquire about the case, we learned that my sister's killer had been arrested. After the relevant court rejected his bail, he is now trying to obtain bail from the High Court," he said.
Ariful believes Ashraful deliberately returned to Bangladesh on the day of the national election and tried to keep the arrest quiet while attempting to secure bail.
According to family members, Afroza and Ashraful had lived in Canada for many years, where they met and later got married. Afroza had previously been married and had two daughters and a son from that marriage who lived with them.
After Afroza went missing, Ariful filed a general diary with Dakshinkhan Police Station. By the time police recovered her body four days later, Ashraful had already fled to Canada.
