6 arrested over temple gold theft in Satkhira
Temple authorities initially estimated that valuables worth around Tk1.8 million were stolen in the incident.
Police have arrested six people in connection with the theft of gold ornaments from a temple in Satkhira.
The suspects were sent to court yesterday (12 March), police said.
The arrestees are Tanvir Rahman, 21, son of Masudur Rahman of Puratan Satkhira; Rakibul Islam Rakib, 25, son of Rezaul Hossain Bablul; Monirul Islam, 20, son of Shahidul Islam; Al Imran Hossain Sakib, 25, son of Shahjahan Ali of Palashpol; Rabiul Islam, 25, son of Ziaur Rahman of Parmachkhola; and Bablu Gazi, 42, son of Nur Islam Gazi of Gangnia Mahamudpur.
Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Masudur Rahman said, "In connection with the theft of gold ornaments from the temple, a case has been filed at the police station against unidentified persons. Six suspected thieves were arrested during raids in different areas. The accused have been sent to jail through the court."
According to police, the theft occurred early Wednesday (11 March) when the perpetrators broke the locks of several rooms of the Satkhira Central Temple and entered the premises.
They allegedly stole gold ornaments from the idols, silver items and cash from the donation boxes.
Sanggib Kumar, joint general secretary of the Satkhira District Temple Committee, said CCTV footage shows the thieves entered after cutting the locks of the grill gates of the Kali Temple, Annapurna Temple, Radhagobinda Temple, and Jagannath Temple within the Maayer Bari temple complex and stole gold ornaments from the idols along with cash.
"In total, around eight bhori of gold ornaments and Tk10,000 in cash were taken," he added.
