9 including ex-army member arrested over Tk25 lakh robbery posing as DB police in Savar
Based on information they provided during preliminary questioning, two more suspects were later arrested from the Kakrail area of Dhaka.
Police have arrested nine people, including a dismissed member of the Bangladesh Army, in connection with a robbery in Savar last month, where a group posing as members of the Detective Branch (DB) police looted Tk25 lakh in cash and seven pay orders worth Tk3.25 crore.
Addressing a press briefing today (14 October), Dhaka District DB's Additional Superintendent of Police Zahidul Islam Khan said that acting on a tip-off, DB officers arrested seven members of the gang along with a microbus while they were preparing for another robbery near Savar's Fulbaria bus stand on 12 October.
Based on information they provided during preliminary questioning, two more suspects were later arrested from the Kakrail area of Dhaka.
He identified the arrestees as Md Shahidul Islam, 42, Md Suman Mia, 65, Siddiqur Rahman alias Idris, 48, Afzal Hossain alias Uzzal, 42, Mamun Ahmed Mintu, 52, Mehedi Hasan, 27, Shamim Ahmed Sobuj, 32, Md Shahadat, 60, and Md Farhad Hossain, 37.
Additional SP Zahidul confirmed that one of the arrestees was a dismissed member of the army, but he did not officially confirm his identity at the press briefing.
According to police sources, 27-year-old Mehedi is the dismissed army member. They did share his former rank and other details as the investigation is ongoing.
According to the case statement, the incident took place on 25 September when three officials of Delicate Garments Ltd were en route to the Tejgaon registry office after withdrawing Tk25 lakh from a bank to complete a land registration.
As their car reached the Bhanga Bridge area on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, the robbers intercepted the vehicle, introduced themselves as DB officers, and forcibly took the victims into a microbus at gunpoint.
The victims were handcuffed, beaten, and later abandoned at different locations after the robbers fled with the cash and pay orders.
One of the factory officials filed a case at Savar Model Police Station the next day (26 September) against unidentified assailants.
During the 12 October raid, police recovered Tk5 lakh of the looted money and seized the microbus used in the crime. They also seized a toy pistol, holster, three RAB jackets, a walkie-talkie, a pair of handcuffs, an electric shock device, a weighing machine, three pocket routers, a stick, and 10 SIM cards.
DB official Zahidul said all the arrestees already have several criminal cases against them. They were later produced before a court with a seven-day remand plea.
