Ex-MP Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin shown arrested in murder case
On 5 August 2024, during the July movement, Mahfuz Alam Shraban was shot in the chest while protesting near Mirpur Shopping Complex, as demonstrators came under attack.
A Dhaka court has ordered to show former lawmaker Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of a pharmaceutical company employee during the July movement last year.
The case was filed over the death of Mahfuz Alam Shraban, an employee of Renata Pharmaceuticals, who was shot dead in the Mirpur area of the capital.
Following a petition filed by police, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted the application today (14 January), ordering that Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin be shown arrested in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Earlier, investigation officer Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman of Mirpur Police Station produced the accused before the court from jail custody and sought permission to show him arrested in the case. After hearing the petition, the court allowed the plea and sent him back to prison.
Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin, a former Awami League lawmaker from the Dhaka-7 constituency, was initially arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Mohammadpur on 20 January last year. He has remained in prison since then.
According to the case statement, on 5 August 2024, during the July movement, Mahfuz Alam Shraban took part in a protest in Mirpur. At around 2:30pm, while passing through the road between Mirpur Shopping Complex and Mirpur Model Police Station, protesters came under attack. A bullet fired by the accused hit Shraban on the left side of his chest.
He was rushed to a hospital in Mirpur, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin served as president of the now-banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League from 1981 to 1983. He was elected to parliament in 2008 from the Dhaka-7 constituency as a candidate of the Bangladesh Awami League.
