Writ seeks probe into death of 84 elephants in Chattogram region

A writ petition has been filed seeking the High Court directive to investigate the cause of death of 84 elephants in Chattogram region in the last 19 years.

Supreme Court lawyer Manoj Kumar Bhowmik on Monday filed the writ petition in public interest.

In the petition, the secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, chief conservator of forests and conservator of forests of Chattogram region have been made respondents.

Manoj Kumar Bhowmik said, in the petition, he had prayed to the court to order the authorities concerned to immediately form a high-level committee to probe the unwarranted death of the elephants.

In the writ petition, he has attached a report published in an English daily on August 23.

The report mentioned that according to the Forest Department, 106 elephants have died in the Chattogram Forest Circle (Cox's Bazar, part of Bandarban, Chattogram city and Rangamati) in the last 19 years.

Of them, only 22 died of geriatric complications. 

The rest 84 elephants died of various causes, including accidents, illness, electrocution and gunshot wounds.
